A Letter from the EO - Social Impact and 25 Years of the Elders Council!

Dear EC Members,

I hope you’re all well. I wanted to share some exciting updates and reflections from the EC.

Over the past few years, we’ve been working with Vivensa Foundation (formerly Dunhill Medical Trust) to better understand the real impact EC has, both for our members and for Newcastle as a city. Our Research Impact Group (RIG) has been interviewing members to hear directly how being part of EC has affected their lives. When I attended a residential event in Derby recently, it was clear just how much our creative projects help reveal that impact and open up new ways for us to connect and grow together.

One of the most exciting things we’re working on right now is our 25th anniversary legacy and intergenerational project. This year-long project, supported by the Newcastle Cultural Investment Fund, will celebrate the voices of older people in Newcastle through a legacy book and a short film. The book will be made up of stories, poems, and reflections from members like you, capturing the heart and history of the EC and our community. If you’d like to be involved in sharing your story or contributing creatively, we would love to hear from you!

To help bring this project to life, we’re currently recruiting a freelance Creative Coordinator. This role will lead creative writing workshops, support the book’s production, collaborate on the film, and help organise a book launch event. If you know someone with a passion for storytelling and community work, please do share this opportunity with them. Closing date for applications is 7th July 2025.

Right now, we’re deep into AGM planning and putting together the annual report, so there’s lots happening behind the scenes. Also, our first OWLS (Older Writers’ Legacy and Spoken Word) session is coming up this Thursday morning (11-1pm at Alphabetti Theatre). It’s a great chance to connect, share ideas, and get involved, so please come along if you can.

Thank you for being part of this journey with us. Together, we’re making Newcastle a stronger, more connected place for older people.

Speak soon,

Victoria
